…but I’ve kinda got a girl-crush on you.”
But we don’t usually. “Girl crushes” between heterosexual women are just envy in disguise, as it’s cleverly and hilariously depicted in Rachel Bloom’s “Feeling Kinda Naughty” video (found below).
My YA novel is called Ever Yours, and it’s a gothic suspense about unrequited love with a Jekyll & Hyde twist. In the story, I wanted to explore female relationships and how–in some areas–they haven’t evolved so much over the years. There’s a girl in the story called Madeleine Ashford (who may or may not be haunting her former living quarters). She’s from the 1940s, lives a lonely life, does nothing but play her piano and write letters to her unrequited crush, letters that she never sends out. She hates that her father expects her to marry a rich man to save the family business, resents the fact that he wishes that she’d been born a boy. But what does she do? She longs for the boy next door, a WWII survivor that sees her as a friend and nothing more.
Fast forward to modern times. The Ashford estate is now a boarding school for girls. Anyway, to summarize, my fanciful protagonist longs for a boy from a neighboring school, and she hates his girlfriend. She also envies her. As a result, my protagonist finds Madeleine Ashford’s dress and decides to wear it, and that’s when the weirdness begins.
She and Madeleine are not so different. They’re girls from different time frames, and yet they’re both longing for the unobtainable, and hate those that cross their paths. Their stories intertwine, and my protagonist learns a few good life lessons (or at least I hope she does).
Women will continue to have this paradoxical relationship for many generations to come. We are taught to be competitive with one another. Even the most devout feminist has had her moments. We’re preprogrammed to be this way, and it’s going to take a while before we’re completely de-programmed. But at least we’re halfway there (at least I hope we are).
That is why I love this video (a Katy Perry parody, perhaps?). And that is why I love Rachel Bloom. I might even say that I kind of have a girl-crush on her. I love her sense of humor and creativity, so much so that I want to lock her in a basement with soundproof walls and take over her identity… 😉
